It's fun even if you don't know the music.
The Quentin Blake illustrations are cool. The lyrics are very readable. (Quentin Blake illustrated many Roald Dahl books) A 4 year old friend of mine loves this book and sings along with it.

Julius Caesar: Great Dictator of Rome (Dk Discoveries)
Published in Hardcover by DK Publishing (April, 2001)
Authors: Richard Platt, Melanie Rice, and Dorling Kindersley Publishing
Average review score:

Well, not the noblest Roman but Rome's Greatest Dictator
If you believe in portents, soothsayers, and the like, then the auspices are not good for "Julius Caesar: Great Dictator of Rome." On the opening page there appears a bust of Julius Caesar and a quote from Shakespeare's play of that name, to wit "This was the noblest Roman of them all." The only problem, of course, is that the line is uttered by Marc Antony at the end of the play about Brutus, not Caesar; the compliment is that because of all the conspirators, only Brutus did so because he thought it was the best thing for Rome and not because it furthered his own political ambition. Still, there is reason to hope that those who put together this volume for the DK Discoveries series paid better attention to the historical and biographical details of their subject.

This book is as much about the transformation of the Roman Republic into an Empire as it is a biography of Julius Caesar. We begin by looking as Caesar's Rome and what the Roman world was like when Caesar was born in 100 B.C.E. Richard Platt provides the text and the book combines illustrations by John James and Jim Robins for the key events in Caesar's life while the margins are field with detailed notes and photographs of ancient statues and artifacts. As is usually the case, I like the combination of biography, history and archaeology. The book even puts its subject in the context of the Hero Through History and other Rulers of Rome.

Even if you know the basics of Caesar's life, this book still provides fascinating details. My favorite: The Roman Senate met in the assembly hall at Pompey's theater complex, Rome's grandest building. While Caesar was being assassinated, an audience of thousands of Romans was being entertained on the vast stage next door by gladiators (some of who were hidden in the Senate to help the conspirators). I had never heard that before, having assumed, like most people, that the Roman Senate met at the Roman Senate. There are other equally interesting tidbits (e.g., the Temple of Julius Caesar was built by Augustus on the site of Caesar's cremation). So, despite the opening gaff, this is a solid effort that will help students learn about Julius Caesar and the Rome he helped build.

Well-Rounded Look at Junior High Ministry
Wayne Rice encompasses many perspectives and areas of junior high ministry. The physical, social, intellectual, emotional, and faith areas of development within a junior higher were discussed for a more complete understanding of their changing world. It was very informative and the book made some exceedingly good points that should be remembered when working with this age group.

It is a quick and easy read and very informative with the basics needed. I believe that if you want to get a quick grasp with some in depth insights on junior high ministry this would be an excellent choice.

It Just Lifts You Up
This in one of the first books that I've ever read by this famous writer. The poems are heartfelt and totally inspirational as Helen Steiner Rice shares her precious thoughts with us, and eases our burdens through her written word.
Mostly for those bent in acknowledging God's precious creation also the magic of love.....and also some poems suitable for kids. Her work is very simply written and it is so amazing that one woman who went through so much illness and misfortune could still look at life in such a positive manner. Readers you can't miss this. This book is worth your time.

The Land of Hidden Men
Published in Paperback by Ace Books (April, 1982)
Author: Edgar Rice Burroughs
Average review score:

Good old-fashioned ERB jungle adventure!
If you're looking for good 1930's era pulp fiction, you've come to the right place. Fans of ERB's Mars, Venus, Pellucidar, or Tarzan books will enjoy this novel. True, the plot is somewhat predicatable, and the chapters read like monthly installments (like they were), but its great fun to read. You also have to ignore some of the prejudices of the era, particularly the roles of women and men, but as long as you know that going in, you'll enjoy a good story.

Brings to life the vibrant energy of the Las Vegas area
Las Vegas With Love is a lavishly beautiful, full-color collection of 256 original watercolor paintings by artist Dorothy Rice. Ms. Rice has provided commentary notes on most of her paintings, which bring to life the vibrant energy of the Las Vegas area in an unforgettable impression. Her ever-so-slightly abstract, signature style is so unique that she is one of the only Americans ever invited to create a mural in Mexico, a nation well-known for its tradition of murals. Las Vegas With Love is an exemplary and highly recommended showcase of her work, as well as a wondrous artistic showcase featuring the best and most memorable facets of the amazing city Ms. Rice has wonderfully captured upon the canvas.

Lessons For Leaders: Building A Winning Team From the Ground Up

This is an impact book. Buy it and learn from the best!
In the early 1980s, I met a running back from the Cincinnati Bengals who spoke about his coach, Dr. Homer Rice, in such glowing terms that I resolved to meet the man or read anything he wrote at the first opportunity.

When I found that Lessons for Leaders had been published, I purchased the book, read it in three evenings, then read it again in order to highlight all the powerful concepts that are contained in this manuscript. I became even more interested in how I could use Dr. Rice's Total Person Concept and apply it to my own life and to our family at home.

I then initiated contact with two individuals who could put me in contact with Dr. Rice. I was able to get in the car with my daughter, drive the ten hours from Richmond to Atlanta, and meet with Dr. Rice. Dr. Rice taught a private session for the two of us where he explained in detail the techniques of his Total Person Concept and how this has become the Total Person Program that has been used with sustained success with student athletes at Ga Tech and now at other universities through the NCAA Champions program. We were also allowed to attend Dr. Rice's Leadership Fitness class.

The man is the real McCoy. He is a class act; and his superb track record at Ga Tech has to rank him as one of the finest athletics administrators in the history of intercollegiate athletics.

Do yourself a favor - buy the book; learn the concepts; put them into practice in your own life first. Then teach these concepts to others. Then come back to Amazon.com and purchase two or three copies of this book for your friends or family members. The book will make an impact for excellence in the lives of all who read it.
